SOUNDBITE (French) Francois Hollande, French president: "France has no intention of remaining here in Mali because it is Malians themselves, Africans, who will achieve security, independence, and sovereignty in Mali. This is how I see the relationship between France and Africa: one of respect, democracy, transparency." 9. Mid of Hollande greeting members of crowd STORYLINE: French President Francois Hollande made a triumphant stop on Saturday in Bamako, the capital of Mali, six days after French forces ousted radical Islamists who were occupying the city. Local crowds stood elbow-to-elbow behind a perimeter line in Bamako, dancing, drumming, singing and waving French and Malian flags. Hollande's arrival in Bamako was cause for celebration amongst its residents, and crowds chanted his name and strained to catch a glimpse of him as he strolled alongside Mali's interim president Dioncounda Traore. His visit comes three weeks after France unilaterally launched a military intervention in order to stem the advance of the al-Qaida-linked fighters, and since then French troops have succeeded in ousting the rebels from the three main northern cities they occupied. Traore and Hollande both addressed the crowd in Bamako's Independence Square. The interim Mali president expressed his thanks for French assistance in forcing back the advance of Islamic radical fighters in the north of the country. Despite the outpouring of joy, many have expressed worry about France's long-term intentions. In his speech Hollande made it clear that France intends to hand over control of the recaptured terrain to Mali's military, and to the African troops pledged by neighbouring countries to the cause. Mali's military has proved to be no match for the better-armed Islamic extremists, who seized a territory equal in size to France last year, after the army simply abandoned their posts.
